Our Story
brittany Harris & sARAH overton
A new collaboration between two Black female cellists, Sarah Overton and Brittany Harris, that reimagines what it means to hold these multiple identities today. We first met during Wondersmith Entertainment’s Passing the Crown: A Celebration of Women in Hip-Hop and quickly recognized our shared vision: to push beyond classical music’s confines and challenge societal ideas around Blackness, femininity, and tradition.
Sarah is multi-genre cellist with large-scale performance experience that blends work across film, theater, and jazz; and have a separate career as an arts advocate and lecturer. Brittany, multi instrumentalist, educator, composer/sound designer, and improvisational artist, is a powerful force in the alternative music/songwriting scene, taught music in NYC schools, and has been featured as the national touring e-cellist for "The Emo Orchestra". Together, we blend technical mastery with a shared mission to foster inclusivity and explore new ways of creating music.
Inspired by Black rock icons like "In Living Color" and cello icons such as "Apocalyptica" and Tina Guo, we hope to produce a five-song EP and create workshops for musicians of all ages, blending classical instruments with pedals, software, and alternative styles.

New Music USA cREATOR fUND aWARDEES
The New Music Creator Fund offers grants to individual music creators working in any genre who need support to get to the next stage of their creative practice. Fempire will use the awarded funds to release thier first EP as a band.
